On Saturday, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, announced that the election in the Esan and Igueben federal constituency in Edo State has been suspended.

The reason for the suspension was the omission of a party’s logo on ballot papers. Yakubu stated that the poll will now take place on March 11, along with the governorship and state assemblies’ polls. The ballot papers will be reprinted, and the elections will be conducted alongside the constituency elections in the next two weeks.

Additionally, the election in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, was suspended by INEC due to electoral violence and the absence of voting materials. Yakubu noted that the situation is now calm, and voting will take place the following morning.

Yakubu reassured Nigerians that INEC is committed to ensuring that no citizen is disenfranchised. The commission had previously suspended the senatorial election in Enugu East Senatorial District on Friday due to the killing of the Labour Party’s senatorial candidate for the district. The party will replace the deceased candidate, and the election will now be held in the district on March 11.
