The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, announced that a total of 146,913 domestic and international observers would be deployed for the 2023 general election.

This was disclosed at the INEC briefing for observers in Abuja on Tuesday, and according to the INEC chairman, it is the largest number of observers ever deployed in the history of Nigeria.

The commission has accredited 196 national and domestic organizations, which will deploy 144,800 observers, and 33 international organizations, which will deploy 2,113 observers. This brings the total number of groups deploying observers to 229.

Yakubu acknowledged the positive impact of election observers’ observations and recommendations on the country’s electoral process over the years. He also reminded observers to refrain from partisanship and to abide by the laws of Nigeria during their duties on election day.

Regional Director, Africa, International Foundation for Electoral Systems, Clara Cole, noted that election observations contribute to public confidence, expose irregularities, and provide improvements to elections. She urged all observers to adhere to the guidelines and principles set out by INEC.

In conclusion, the 2023 general election will witness the largest deployment of domestic and international observers in Nigeria’s history, and INEC has reiterated its commitment to conducting a transparent and credible process.
