President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, in Daura, Katsina State, said that he did not intervene in the system that threw up Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, this was to honor the party’s decision and the former Lagos State governor’s previous track record of competence.
Buhari, who made the divulgence when he paid a Sallah homage to the emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Usman, confirmed that the Federal Government was doing everything possible to fight insecurity in the country, and implored Nigerians to allow peace to reign during the next year’s general elections.
“When the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) motioned parties to elect their presidential candidates, we had 30 aspirants, mostly ministers in my cabinet, and governors… I told each of the candidates to go and do their best. One particular governor, in his knowledge, came to meet me and asked who they should vote for at the party’s convention, checking if I had a choice candidate.
“There was no need for interference, knowing the competence status of all the aspirants. They went and elected Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and he selected his running mate, Senator Kashim Ibrahim Shettima …” he declared, adding that the democratic process that brought up Tinubu revealed the will of the party members, hence “there was no need for interference.
