Omah Lay on ‘Boy Alone’ album title
Boy Alone” is my father’s name. It’s actually a nickname but that’s what I grew up hearing everybody call my dad. I grew up realising that my dad’s personality and everything that he used to be just reinforced, I find a lot of his traits around me.
This album is actually a dedication to my dad, and at the same time ‘Boy Alone’ means a lot of things. To me, it means uniqueness. To me, it means that nobody else is like you, everybody is themselves, nobody can do this thing the way you can do it.
Omah Lay on debut album ‘Boy Alone’
Everybody who already knows me already knows that my music is real, my music is me. I talk my story and that’s all I do. ‘Boy Alone’ is just a series of my stories, a series of things that have been happening with me in a couple of years.
I blew up in 2020… I started this whole thing in 2020 with my first project, and I also put out my second project that same year. Since then it’s been a couple of singles and a lot of struggles. Life is a struggle on its own, it’s been two whole years and a lot of experiences in my life. Every single experience that I had, every single way that I felt at some point, I kind of just put words into it and added melody on top of it. I made a song with it and compiled all those moments, all those feelings, all those experiences.
Omah Lay on lack of collaborations
One thing I really don’t like to do is chase down collaborations. You know it’s part of the life as an artist, as a musician who wants to grow and build something, but chasing down collaborations is really not my thing. Everything happens organically, I feel like my music is really my story, you feel me? I feel like there could be some misinterpretation with my story if the wrong person or somebody I don’t have a connection with is on a song with me. It could go wrong, so I’m really really careful with my collaborations and it’s something that is really deliberate.
