Louisville City has announced in a statement its decision to pay Breonna Taylor’s family the sum of $12M over unlawful police shooting. This decision is to pursue a legal settlement with the deceased’s family.

Furthermore, the legal settlement, which was announced by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and Breonna Taylor’s family attorneys, included the plan to execute the following police reforms, commanding officers signing off on search warrants; a housing-credit incentive for police officers to live in low-income neighborhoods to foster community connections; mandatory volunteering sessions; and social workers assisting with mental-health calls. The Louisville City Council has also passed the “Breonna’s Law,” which bans no-knock search warrants.

The 26-year old Black American, Breonna Taylor was killed on March 13 by Louisville police officers executing a no-knock warrant, which allows officers to storm a residence without announcing their presence.

In response to the legal settlement, Breonna Taylor’s family still insists that the police who committed the unlawful killing should be prosecuted and convicted. This was said during a press conference where Tamika Palmer, Breonna Taylor’s mum said that the legal settlement was only the beginning of getting justice for her daughter.

She said, “It’s time to move forward with the criminal charges, because she deserves that and much more. Her beautiful spirit and personality is working through all of us on the ground. So please continue to say her name. Breonna Taylor.”
