Around 17.4 million Americans watched the first episode of the final season of “Game of Thrones” – a record for the series, HBO has announced.
The series has also become HBO’s biggest hit to date.
The last season averaged 32.8 million viewers per episode when delayed viewing was added, but HBO expect the latest season to exceed that considerably.
The show isn’t the biggest attraction on American Television though. The accolade belongs to the NFL’s Super Bowl which attracts about 100 million viewers, although Game of Thrones has a more bigger appeal outside of the United States.
The show is available in over 150 countries worldwide, but BHO said it is difficult to get viewing data in many of those markets.
