Algerian police on Tuesday clashed with protesters demonstrating against the appointment of Abdelkader Bensalah as the new interim president.
Following the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Bensalah, who is speaker of parliament’s upper house was installed interim president.
The move didn’t go down well with demonstrators who are demanding for more radical change.
As soon as the appointment of Bensalah was announced, protesters took to the streets of the capital, Algiers.
Bensalah is a close friend to the former president, who had been in power in the North African country for 20 years.
Mr Bensalah has pledged to organise free elections within 90 days. Protesters believe he is being used as front for a group of businessmen, politicians and military officials, who are said to really run the country.
“We – citizens, the political class and state institutions – must work to ensure the conditions, all conditions, are right for a transparent and regular presidential poll,” he said during a televised address on Tuesday.
