Five-time champion Roger Federer crashed out of the US Open after losing to 55th-ranked Australian, John Millman who will now face Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final.
Millman’s 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/3) defeat of Federer meant the Swiss player suffered his earliest defeat in the US. open since 2013. and also stopped a much anticipated match between Federer and two-time US Open champion Djokovic who defeated Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
It was also the 20-time major winner’s first loss against a player outside the top 50 in in his 41 meetings at the US Open.
The Australian revealed he was surprised at the turn of events and called Federer “A hero of mine.”
“I’m probably in a little bit of disbelief,” He said.
“I have so much respect for Roger and everything he’s done for the game. He’s been a hero of mine.”
Federer could was on his way to winning after taking the first set, but he self imploded with 77 unforced errors which got a determined Millman back into the game.
Federer was also not helped by the humidity. His shirts and shorts were soaked with sweat most of the game and he looked uncomfortable playing in the heat.
“It was very hot,” Federer said after the game.
“I felt I couldn’t get any air and I was sweating more and more and became more and more uncomfortable.
“John dealt with it better. He’s from Brisbane, one of the most humid places in the world.
Millman also had his own issues during the game and admitted to being nervous doing the opening exchanges.
“I felt like a bit of a deer in the headlights to begin with,” said Millman, whose career has been slowed by a string of injuries and three surgeries.
“The feet weren’t moving. Roger had it on a string, he was manipulating me around the court.”
Federer looked his 37years as he struggled to find rhythm after the first set but kept throwing them away after one forced error was followed by another.
“Today he was definitely not at his best,” Millman said.
“But I’ll take it.” The Australian added.
