The National Emergency Management Agency on Wednesday said Twenty-six people have been killed in two days of violence which has been blamed on Cattle thieves in the North.
NEMA spokesman Suleiman Kadir told AFP that bandits on motorcycles suspected to be cattle thieves attacked several villages on the border between Sokoto and Zamfara states on Monday and Tuesday, shooting residents, burning homes and stealing cows.
He said: “At the moment, 26 dead bodies have been recovered from the attacks,”
“The toll may rise with the latest attack from yesterday (Tuesday).”
According to him, residence of the two affected villages in Rabah district of Sokoto have been rendered homeless as many houses were burnt and their cattles have stolen.
Sokoto state police spokeswoman Cordelia Nwawe said: “Three communities in Zamfara and two villages close to Rabah were completely burnt.”
While the police are saying the details are sketchy, this is not the first time these communities have been at the receiving end of these sort of events. They have been terrorised by cattle thieves for a while now.
