Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has been appointed Spain’s new coach on Monday following the sack of incumbent, Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the World Cup.
President of the Spanish federation, Luis Rubiales has revealed the appointment was approved unanimously.
This follows the crisis that engulfed Spanish football on the eve of the World Cup when Rubiales fired Julen Lopetegui who had gone behind the federations back to sign for Real Madrid, even though he just signed a new contract with the Spanish Federation a month earlier. Sporting director Frenando Hierro was drafted to step in, buty Spain could only muster a second-round elimination to Russia through penalties.
Hierro has since stepped down.
The Federation has also appointed Jose Francisco Molina, a former goalkeeper at Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna as the new sporting director..
Enrique who was Barcelona coach for three years , guided the Catalan giants to the treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League titles in his first campaign in charge.
