Erdogan to take Oath of Office as first Turkish President with expanded power

Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be sworn in as Turkey’s First Executive President with vastly expanded powers on Monday, after winning last months election that guarantees he rules Turkey with unprecedented power.

He will take the oath of office at the Grand National Assembly in Ankara at 4;30 pm. The oath completes Turkey metamorphosis from a parliamentary model to an all powerful presidency.

His inauguration at the 1,150-room presidential palace will be attended by 22 presidents and 28 prime ministers and parliament speakers, among others, state News Agency, Anadolu, reported.

In the new rule, Erdogan will become both the head of state and the Government and has power to appoint Justices for the Judiciary and also rule by decree.

His new found powers were approved by a thin majority in the referendum vote, while he won re-election with 52.59% of votes.

He won re-election on June 24, with 52.59 per cent of votes.

In parliamentary polls held the same day, his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) secured a majority.

Under the new system, Erdogan who has been in power for 15 years, is given a fresh start, which means he starts his first five-year term today.

There is a two-term limit on the office of the president, so if he wins a re-election, he could stay in power till 2028.
