The West African Examinations Council, on Wednesday released the result of its 2018 School certificate examination.
The body said that only 49.98% of those that wrote the examination obtained credit passes or above.
According to the examination body, the credit passes included English Language and Mathematics.
While speaking to the Media, Waec’s Head of National Office, Mr. Olu Adenipekun, said there is a maarked decline in the performance of students compared to the other years. He said a total of 1,578,846 persons registered for the examination in Nigeria, while 1,572,396 sat for the examination, while only 786,016 candidates, representing 49.98 per cent who sat for the examination, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
He said: “If we should compare the performance of candidates for this year’s examination under this category with that of 2016, which was 52.97 and in 2017; 59.22, we are safe to say it is fluctuating, just as it is declining.
“These statistics are clear for you to see and make your judgment,” he said
The body also said that a total of 102,058 candidates had a few of their subjects still being processed, due to errors made the candidates while writing the examinations,
Mr Adenipekun also assured that the Council is working tirelessly to solve the problem.
Candidates who sat for the examination can now go online to check their result, provided they have settled all their debts.
