The former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, has said Nigerians should look beyond partisanship and vote for a leader that will change the country, especially in the key aspect of education, healthcare, and economy next year.
Sanusi complained that Nigeria is near collapse because of the incapacity of leaders to transform the country. He noted that education, healthcare, and the economy are the foundation of development and that any country that fails to develop these areas will fail woefully.
Sanusi spoke in Lagos at The August Event 2022 organized by the Moses Adekoyejo Majekodunmi Foundation in collaboration with St Nicholas Hospitals.
Sanusi, who was chairman of the occasion, complained that many healthcare workers are leaving the country because of the government’s inability to provide an enabling environment for the healthcare profession to grow.
He said the time has gone when Nigerians voted for candidates because of the political party they belong to.
“Political aspirants should also be asked of their agendas for hospitals and education amongst other key undeveloped areas in the country,” he said.
“The government has lost respect for the profession and no amount capitalized into education can be gotten back in salaries in this country. Doctors and teachers deserve a decent life and respect.
“Education and healthcare are the basic foundation for the development of a nation, and the rate of brain drain is high because prepared budgets in the health and education sectors have been stolen and mismanaged.”
He added: “In 2011, a debate was held right here in this same venue about fuel subsidy. We did everything within our powers to tell Nigerians to cater first to priorities, but we now spend a borrowed ?6.7 trillion on fuel subsidy which will continue until June 2023.
“Inflation, exchange rates, cheap fuel that is not produced by our refineries all create negative effects, and are also a brain drain of the economy which cannot be addressed in isolation.”
