Uganda President Museveni, 74, To Run For Sixth Term
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda is seeking for his sixth term in office after his party endorsed him to run for President in 2021.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) agreed to do so in a meeting chaired by Mr Museveni on Wednesday. According to the party, Museveni should remain in power to “continue leading the movement and the state in 2021 and beyond to eliminate bottlenecks to transformation”.
This comes after Museveni scrapped the Presidential age limit of 75 which would have stopped him from running for office for a sixth time. The move sparked protests as many believed he was trying to be president for life.
The Ugandan Supreme Court has began hearing a petition to challenge this decision. Last month Uganda’s Supreme Court began hearing a petition to challenge this decision.
Museveni, who seized power at the head of a rebel army in 1986, once said leaders who “overstayed” were the root of Africa’s problems.
