Jussie Smollett Arrested For Filing False Report
Jussie Smollet has turned himself into police custody early Thursday morning, and has a bond hearing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. local time.
According to the Chicago Police, the Empire star has been officially indicted by a grand jury and faces felony charges for filing a false police report and disorderly conduct.
If the actor is found guilty, he could face up to three years in prison.
He is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
Smollett had told authorities he was attacked by two men who were yelling racial and homophobic slurs. He also informed police that one of the men put a rope around his neck and poured an unknown substance on him.
Meanwhile police spokesperson, Anthony Guglielmi has said the actor has been charged with felony disorderly conduct, an offense that could carry one to three years in prison and force the actor to pay for the cost of the investigation into his report of the beating.
Authorities now believed he paid the two Nigerian men to attack him.
The Nigerian brothers who had worked as extras on Empire told police that they were paid to take part in the 29 January attack, police sources said
They were arrested without charges on Friday and later released. They are also believed to be cooperating with the authorities.
Smollett lawyer’s Todd Pugh and Victor Henderson said they would investigate the new allegations.
“Like any other citizen, Mr Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked,”
