Pep Guardiola Declares Interest In Arsenal Forward Alexis Sanchez

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola appear stepping up his pursuit of Alexis Sanchez by declaring his top summer target ‘one step below’ Lionel Messi.

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester City are ready to bid £50m for the Arsenal striker, who is refusing to sign a new contract at the Emirates.

Guardiola is determined strengthen his attack and has identified Sanchez as the man to add the cutting edge he believes City have lacked this season.

He signed the Chilean international for Barcelona in 2011 – but the 28-year-old was unable to establish himself ahead of Messi at the Nou Camp.

But Guardiola remains a firm admirer – even more so after seeing his development at Arsenal.

“Messi creates that – where all of the players who go there and start training with him realise immediately that they will always be below him,” said the City manager.

“Even the big, big players, who believe they are top – they come there and they understand that he is unique in those terms.

“But Alexis is just one step below. Of course Alexis is a fantastic player.

“I’m so happy how happy he is at Arsenal and how he is playing – especially this year, scoring goals and assists.”

Guardiola most recently watched Sanchez’ performance in Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Middlesbrough on Monday.

He added: “It was a tight game – (his) free kick, goal, over.

“Good players make these kind of things – the difference. He’s a player of that level.”

City face competition from Paris St Germain and Chelsea for Sanchez, while United are also believed to be interested.

Guardiola insists it natural for the world’s top clubs to pursue the forward.

“Put Kevin de Bruyne with one year left on his contract and see how many teams want him,” he said.

“The big players with one year contracts – two years, three years – all the clubs around the world in the summertime are going to try to improve, improve.

“How do we improve the teams? Better players.

“Of course, all the better players around the world – Alexis is one of them – they (the clubs) are going to know what their situation is.”
