What You Do Defines Who You Are
“It’s not what you are underneath. It’s what you do that defines you.” Batman Begins
“I’m going to change the world!” “I’m going to be so great, no one will recognize me.” “I’m going to start a business in the next 6 months, entrepreneurship is the way” … These are some of the things we’ve said as kids and even now, as adults. While it’s good to dream, making it come true is even better.
We want so many things out of ourselves but sometimes wait for providence to show us the right path. Such noble and brave thoughts, “changing the world”. Have you noticed it is so easy to talk big and still live our lives the way we have always lived, and not following through… While there are young people changing their lives and the little world around them, there are those who have so many ideas but no motivation. Life starts now, not tomorrow. “Tomorrow, I’ll start”, while you are waiting for tomorrow, someone else goes ahead with that same idea, and you cry, “Had I known”. You fault lack of jobs, and or lack of capital to start that business you yearn to start, what’d you do? Successful people don’t just wake up one day and become successful. They have seen and realized that life is happening right now, thus they need to achieve their dreams and goals every day. Any day lost can be disastrous. They “do” instead of “talk”.
Take stock of where you are right now and what you are doing, ask yourself:
- What am I doing at my current day job?
- Does what I am doing at my day job support my overall life goals?
- Am I excited about personal projects? Is the excitement the same with projects at work?
- Do I even have any personal projects?
- Do I have a passion?
- What am I passionate about?
- Am I refining/advancing my skills and knowledge of something daily?
- Do I know, exactly, what I want in life?
While these questions might seem a bit weird or rather very BIG, they are very important. A lot of people hesitate before answering these questions. Successful people already have answers for these questions. They answered yes to all of them and even know the what and why without much thought. Yes, it might not have been easy getting answers to these questions, or getting to the level where they are and will be but you can start now. Forget about your circumstances or environment or the seemingly “lack of ideas” or something. Look for that thing (it could be one, it could be more than one) that you are passionate about. That incredible spark and excitement that comes with doing something you love. If you haven’t found it yet, take note that it won’t just fall into your laps not randomly happen. No, it won’t. It isn’t the result of lots of money, nor is it the result of chance and circumstance. You see a lot of people in business or running their own outfits and heading corporate establishments and assume because their parents are rich, they set them and are always sponsoring them. While this might be true in some instances, there are quite a lot of people who are standing on their own, not as a result of parents’ money or being born into a wealthy home and all.
That incredible spark and excitement for life is the result of freeing yourself mentally and engaging your talent. It’s the result of focus, internal drive, determination and motivation. Looking to find what your passion is? Look around you. There are so many things, engaging things to spend your free time and even your work time doing as well. Do them, explore, don’t do just the normal things you have done in the past that even made you more confused and bored with life in general. Anything that doesn’t bring you joy shouldn’t be engaged in. It is a total waste of time.
Find that thing and you will never live a boring and unfulfilling life. Find it and your mind gets open to boundless inspiration and motivation to go after what it is you want exactly out of life. People who spend their free time engaged in a passion are happier, more creative and more dynamic in their personality than those who merely spend their time as consumers of vapid entertainment pop-culture. I saw a picture on a friend’s phone some time ago. It showed a picture of a Lamborghini and asked if anyone has ever seen an advert of it on TV. Answer is no why? Because those who ride them don’t watch TV. They are busy chasing their dreams.
Start today. Find that which you will do that will bring you untold joy and happiness and contentment, because ultimately, it is not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines who you are and what you get out of life.
