Turkish Journalists Jailed For Republishing Charlie Hebdo Cartoon

Two Turkish journalists, Hikmet Cetinkaya and Ceyda Karan have been sentenced to two years in jail in relation to publishing a Charlie Hebdo cartoon.

Both journalists are columnists with the Cumhuriyet newspaper and published a cartoon originally published by Charlie Hebdo which satirized the Prophet Mohammed. The cartoon which was published in January 2015 was the same one which led to the killing of 12 journalists in Paris.

Although the edition republished by the Turkish magazine left out the the Charlie Hebdo front cover, it republished the smaller cartoon. Both journalists were convicted of “openly encouraging hate end enmity among people via the press,”
