Today’s Barclays Premier League fixture was tantalizing for a variety of reasons. Apart from being a North London derby between Arsenal and Chelsea, it represented a unique chance for Arsenall to go atop the table.
With Leicester winning comprehensively yesterday and Manchester City dropping points against West Ham, a win against struggling Chelsea would have seen Arsenal top the table.
Arsenal were hoping that a recent inability to beat Chelsea would end today at the Emirates but it was not to be.
Despite starting brightly and creating most of the chances, Arsenal came undone by a minute of bad fortune.
Center back Per Mertesacker saw red for a tackle as Chelsea broke on the counter and it was the Wake’s defining moment.
Moments later, Chelsea made their numerical advantage count as Diego Costa tapped in the only goal of the match.
Arsenal might feel hard done by the result but it’s soccer, it’s all about results!
