Burkinabes Go To The Polls In Historic Elections

Burkina Faso has endured a chequered political experience lately, with the West African country seemingly tethering on the edge.

Following the military assisted overthrow of long time leader, Blaise Compoare, a transitional government was formed.

Having ruled for 27 years Compare sought to extend his rule. A public uprising led to his exile.

The transitional government led by Isaac Zida and Michael Kafando was overthrown last month in an audacious coup by the Presidential guards. The coup was eventually foiled.

Burkinabes went to the poll today in an attempt to resuscitate their democracy and chart a new path.

14 candidates are contesting the Burkina Faso Presidential elections with Zephirin Diabré and former prime minister Roch Marc Christian Kaboré fancied as the front runners.

Two of the fourteen candidates in the elections are women as five million Burkinabes are expected to cast their votes today.
