Francois Hollande, the President of France has announced that France has commenced airstrikes against the Islamic State In Iraq and Levant Group (ISIL).
The airstrikes are directed at the ISIL stronghold in Syria after France stood out of the Syrian situation for over a year. However, growing concerns over the refugee situation in Europe has made France reconsider their earlier position.
Hollande explained in France’s position “More than ever the urgency is putting in place a political transition”. He said about the airstrike, “The camp was totally destroyed,” and assured there were no civilian casualties.
France is already in cooperation with the United States carrying out air strikes in Iraq.
