The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has announced that the winner of a gold medal for Nigeria in weightlifting, Chika Amalaha has failed a doping test.
Chief executive of CGF, Mike Hooper, confirmed that the 16-year-old, who pulled a total of 196 points in snatch and clean and jerk in the 53kg, tested positive for diuretics and masking agents.
“We [have] issued a formal notice of disclosure to an athlete following an adverse analytical finding as a consequence of an in-competition test.
“That athlete is Nigerian weightlifter Chika Amalaha who was tested on July 25th. That athlete has now been suspended from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”
The backup ‘B’ sample will undergo tests on Wednesday.
Amalaha, who has been provisionally suspended, came tops ahead of Dika Toua from Papa New Guinea and India’s Santoshi Matsu and told reporters after her victory that “it was hard work, training, a lot of pain.”
