Konga Revolutionises Nigeria’s E-Commerce Landscape

 

Buoyed by an online retail culture that is gradually gaining foot in Nigeria, Lagos-based konga.com, an e-commerce start-up founded by Sim Shagaya, commenced operations in July, 2012, with a view to revolutionalise shopping experience in the country and offer shoppers unparalleled, customer-centric service based on trust.

In just eight months, konga.com has grown from its humble staff strength of seven employees huddled together and expectant of their first sale, to 130 staff striving to meet demands of hundreds of customers placing orders daily from all parts of the country from a variety of items for sale on its platform.
As an online e-commerce platform, konga.com offers thousands of products to customers ranging from quality groceries, household products, toys, computer games and consoles, books, beauty and personal care, movies, watches, baby items, toys, mobile and electronic products, all stocked in a 15,000 square foot warehouse, some four minutes drive away from its main office in Ilupeju, Lagos.
Analysing how konga.com works, the Chief Executive Officer, Sim Shagaya, said that the company has built a system where shoppers can come on to the platform, shop and have their orders delivered anywhere in Lagos within 24 hours, and between one to three days anywhere outside Lagos.
The payment system for customers on the platform is as simple as the shopping experience, this time even with more convenient options. konga.com makes it available for customers to pay cash on delivery for items ordered, pay online using debit cards, or swipe cards at any point of sale (POS) terminal. The only exception, however, is that the company does not accept cash in excess of N100,000 or more from customers as a security precaution.For such payments, the online or bank payments are encouraged.
Obsessed with excellent customer service delivery, Mr. Lekan Olakambi, the Vice President, Purchasing of konga.com explains that the company offers a fanstastic customer service system that allows unsatisfied customers a seven-day product return quality  for items that did not meet their expectations.
For a solely indigenous company playing in the ever competitive e-commerce industrydominated by heavily-funded competitors, and taking into cognizance testimonies of some shoppers on the platform, it can be safely concluded that konga.com has done remarkably well for itself considering the short time it has been in existence.
