Toyin Saraki Champions Campaign Against Domestic Violence

For those who think prominent Nigerians are all about ostentatious lifestyles and have no regards or burden for the oppressed females in our midst who get battered by their husbands, it is perhaps, time for a rethink as Mrs. Toyin Saraki is headlining a cause against domestic violence.
Mrs Toyin Saraki is championing the noble cause against domestic violence on the platform of The Wellbeing Foundation, an organisation founded by her Excellency for maternal, newborn and child health, rights and empowerment to reverse the vicious cycle of poverty in the society by easing its less privileged members into a state of wellbeing, which in her opinion is “a satisfactory condition of existence in health, happiness and prosperity’’.
The Foundation is encouraged by the philosophy of the great writer, Elie Wiesel that “If someone suffers and keeps silent, it can be a good silence. If someone suffers and I keep silent, then it is destructive silence. We are responsible for one another. I am responsible for his or her suffering, for his or her destiny”.
According to statistics; domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than
car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. Studies also suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually and it is also a fact that around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime. Most often, the abuser is a member of her own family.
Speaking on the cause, a statement from her office read ‘’most women wake up daily after going through the horrors of the night with their husbands. Some have come to live by the fact that
there is no choice but Mrs. Saraki through her foundation The Wellbeing Foundation has given voices to the voiceless of the society. We do expect more prominent people to follow her footsteps’’.
