This year’s European Champions league has provided its share of upsets at the Quarter final stage.
Unbeaten in 39 matches before their loss to Real Madrid, Barcelona were seen as strong favorites to win the Champions league.
Two goals from Suarez in the first leg ensured that Barcelona came from behind to win 2-1. Atletico’s efforts weren’t helped by Fernando Torres who received his marching orders in the first half.
Diego Simeone’s side knew it would require a masterful performance to stop Barcelona. Atletico Madrid came out with every intention of methodically securing a win.
Leaving Barcelona with all the possession, Barca were hard pressed to create any real chances as Atletico hit them on the break quickly.
Atletico’s talisman Antoine Griezmann popped in the first goal and Atletico’s players ensured that the attacking trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar had a quiet evening.
What is a Barcelona European match without some controversy? Andres Iniesta’s clear handball in the box for which he should have received a red card was ignored by the referee who had a perfect view of the incident.
However, the referee awarded a penalty which Griezman converted to seal his brace and ensure Atletico secured a 2-0 and a 3-2 aggregate win.
Atletico will have a rock of a defense as well as an unyielding midfield to thank for the result. We also get to see more of Simeone’s theatrics in the semi final.
