The World football governing body, FIFA, has elected Gianni Infantino as the new President of the organization.
Infantino, a former UEFA general secretary from Switzerland did not secure enough votes in the first round to win outright after he received 88 votes ahead of Sheikh Salman who received 85 votes. He edged out Prince Ali and Jerome Champagne who received 27 and 7 votes respectively.
In the second round of voting, he received 115 votes to Sheikh Salman’s 88 votes to emerge as the new President as he takes over from Sepp Blatter. FIFA is facing a loss of integrity after several of its top officials were fingered in various corruption scandals.
