The United Nations has ccondemned the attack on the Saudi Arabian embassy in the Iraniwn capital, Tehran.
The embassy was attacked by protesters who were angered by Saudi Arabia’s announcement that it had executed a prominent Shia cleric, Nimr Al Nimr.
The situation has escalated quickly, with Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Bahrain cutting diplomatic ties with Iran.
The UN’s statement was careful to leave out any mention of the execution of Al Nimr but simply urged Iranian authorities to “protect diplomatic and consular property and personnel, and to respect fully their international obligations in this regard”.
