Chigozie Obioma, a Nigerian, was nominated for his critically acclaimed first novel “The Fisherman” while two Americans, Anne Tyler and Hanya Yanagihara were shortlisted for their books “A spool of blue thread” and “A little life”.

Two writers from the UK, Sunjeev Sahota and Tim McCarthy were nominated for “the year of the runaways” and ” Satin Island”.

The award committee described James Marlon’s “A brief history of seven killings” as the “most exciting” of all the books nominated.

James Marlon’s third book contains strong language and it is the Jamaican’s third novel.

Ironically, it was the “uncompromising” nature of his story which the judges considered outstanding.

His novel, set in Jamaica is inspired by the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in the 1970’s.

The Man Booker Prize has a prize money of £50,000.
