West African leaders as well as their representatives met in Abuja today.
The extraordinary meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was convened by Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari.
The meeting was convened to discuss the recent coup in Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso is a West African country and was plunged into political uncertainty last week as the Presidential guard sacked the transitional civilian government.
Burkina Faso has been suspended from the African Union even as the coup plotters have begun negotiations after receiving an ultimatum from the Burkinabe Army.
The Presidential guard installed General Gilbert Diendere as head of state following the military junta and he has promised to set up a transitional government.
The international community has roundly condemned the coup and insists that the junta will not be recognized.
The ECOWAS leaders met today to seek a diplomatic solution to the current Imbroglio.
