The first airstrike by Russia has occurred near the city of Homs, a senior U.S. official told CNN today. Earlier, the Russians told the United States not to fly U.S. warplanes in Syria, but gave no geographical information about where they planned to strike. The senior official said U.S. missions are continuing as normal.
Four Russian Su-34 Fullback fighter jets are now at the Latakia air base in Syria, and more than 600 Russian troops are in place.
Russian parliament had earlier given its President, Vladimir Putin, approval to use its Air Force against Syria as reported by he State media. This support was unanimous – 162 votes in favour of granting permission – and came after Syrian president Bashar al-Assad requested for military assistance in fighting ISIS.
