Mozambique will begin three days of mourning on Saturday, 19 Novemeber, after at least 56 people were killed and more than 100 were injured by a petrol tanker explosion i tete province yesterday, 17 November.
According to Radio Mozambique, the tanker was taking fuel fromthe Mozambican Port to Malawi, via Tete, when it stopped at the village of Caphiridzane, shortly before the Malawian border, too sell some of tits cargo for locals. Thhe driver abandoned his vehicle when the storm began, and locals had started stealing fuel when the tanker was struck by lightning.
A governmrnt statement today put the number of dead at 56, with 97 injured and 36 in seriuos condition -including 16 children and one pregnant woman. Photos circulating on whatsapp showed piles of burnt bodies lying in the road, and burned survivors seeking help in local hospital
