Tara Fela-Durotoye is the founder of House of Tara; one of Nigeria’s most iconic beauty brands which has gone on to establish beauty schools as well as entrepreneurship opportunities for young students in Nigeria.
She was recently featured on CNN’s “African Voices”; a program which celebrates African entrepreneurs as well as some of the cutting edge ideas which are transforming Africa.
She revealed on the program that, growing up, she was inspired by her stepmother’s beauty routine and an early dabble into make up while at the university. She said she was drawn in after seeing first hand “what makeup actually does to a woman in terms of self-esteem and confidence.”
However, she has other passions, and teaching remains one of them; “I am still a teacher, the only thing is that this time, I am not teaching maths or English. I am teaching enterprise: I am teaching makeup artistry as a platform for enterprise.”
For Tara Fela-Durotoye, 37, the most important thing is touching the lives of young people; “There are certain things telling you that you cannot make it; that you will not make it; that Nigeria is not a place where people make it,” says Tara Fela-Durotoye. “I beg to differ.”
