The militant group Boko Haram has attacked Maiduguri, Borno’s capital city today and have reportedly been repelled by the Nigerian army. Reports say that fighting has been very intense and that the Nigerian army is carrying out air strikes.
The Nigerian army has in the interim imposed a curfew in the capital city as roads and shops remain closed as the army battles to flush out the insurgents totally.
The militants also reportedly attacked the town of Monguno today. The Army and government officials insist that the insurgency in Northern Nigeria is firmly under control and that the militants do not control any city in the North contrary to popular reports.
However reports on ground often contradict statements from army official and it is difficult to ascertain the true nature of the situation.
