A deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP), Idowu Oyewole, was in the early hours of yesterday shot dead in his house along Akure/Owo road in the state capital by unknown gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers.
Oyewole, who was the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the convoy of Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, was said to have been shot dead after a three-armed gang attacked him.
The death of the 45-year-old officer and a father of three has thrown the residents, police authority and family members into mourning as the deceased officer was described as easy going.
One of his son, Dare, who narrated the incident to LEADERSHIP Friday in Akure, the state capital, said it was a neighbour who came to their house around 7.30 pm when his father was eating and informed him that armed robbers had entered their house.
Dare said his father took his service pistol and followed the neighbour’s son to his house in order to dislodge the suspected hoodlums.
According to Dare, when the armed robbers noticed that my father was coming, they exchanged gunshot with him.
Dare who was corroborated by other neighbours, said the officer sustained injuries and ran for his life.
Another neighbour who did not want his name mentioned said, Oyewole ran to his house and told them to lock the door because armed robbers were on the street.
She said they could not locate where he was until the morning when they saw his corpse on the ground.
According to her, maybe he was rushing to the nearby hospital and fell on the ground before he could get there as a result of the gun shot.
A source in the neighbourhood said after attacking the police officer, the robbers came to his house and took his four–year old boy hostage, told the wife to open the door saying they would kill the boy if she did not open it.
After waiting at the door and moving around the compound with the boy for about 30 minutes without gaining access to the house, the hoodlums hit the boy’s head with cutlass and he sustained injury on the head.
Confirming the killing of the officer attached to the Mobile Unit of the Police Force, the Public Relation Officer, Mr Femi Joseph said investigation has commenced on the incident.
Joseph said, “We deserve your condolences. He was a disciplined officer. Our eyes are heavy.”
