The holiday shopping season is here, Christmas is around the corner and once again Apple is partnering with Product (RED) to generate awareness and a significant amount of money to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS.
On both Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Apple will be donating a percentage of all retail and online sales to Product (RED), and for the next two weeks will feature a special section in its App store called Apps for (RED) in which several of the store’s most popular apps offer exclusive in-app content, with all proceeds going to the initiative.
Apple’s partnerships have raised $75 million for the Global Fund to fight AIDS. Product (RED) was founded in 2006 by U2 frontman Bono and Kennedy family-member Bobby Shriver. It has raised $275 million so far for the Global Fund, and is currently focusing its efforts and donations towards bringing about the world’s first AIDS-free generation in 30 years.
The last time Apple and Bono teamed up, in September, the results were mixed. The goal then was to make music history by releasing U2’s latest album directly to every iTunes user in the world, but not everyone appreciated the intrusion. This time, though, the partnership and its objectives couldn’t be more welcome.
